"To the memory of the man, first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen," wrote Henry Leefather of Robert E. Leeone of Washington's cavalry officers, after the death of George Washington. Hardly has a leader been more deserving of the boundless admiration of his countrymen. He was born on February 22, 1732 into a family of Virginia planters. In an addition to an on-and-off formal education, he was taught the morals and manners requisite for an 18th century Virginia gentleman.
His first job was that of a surveyor at age sixteen. In 1752 he inherited the Mount Vernon estate from his brother. In 1754 he fought the first skirmishes of what grew into the French and Indian War as a lieutenant colonel.
He was elected to both the first and second Continental Congress and in 1775 was elected Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. In 1781 he ended the war with capture of Yorktown and forced the surrender of General Cornwallis.
When the new Constitution was ratified in 1789, he was unanimously elected the first President. He was elected to a second term in 1792.
