Knowledge-Age Organizations Need a Leadership System

Leadership Nuggets In this time of historical change, even the most effective network leaders are not the only kind we need. They won’t stretch us out of our comfort zones, they won’t inspire us to tackle the big problems facing our country, they won’t transform bureaucratic organizations for the knowledge age, and they won’t make the tough decisions that have to be made when there’s no consensus. For that, we need different types of leaders who collaborate. Knowledge-age organizations need a leadership system rather than a set of individual leaders.

In the age of knowledge work, leadership has become more essential as well as more complex than in earlier times.

Leadership is harder today then ever before in recorded human history. For a significant period of time, I have commented that there is a lacking in leadership across the board and it is more critical then ever. Recently, it dawned on me that leadership just may be harder to perform given the benchmark of what followers now require or demand. It might actually have been easier to be a true leader in the past because the benchmark may have been less challenging and a simpler time. This is not to say that Giants like George Marshall weren't the epitome of the expectation for Great Leaders, or the time they practiced leadership just as complex, WWll tested them beyond imagination; however, can we really imagine them trying to lead 100,000 Patton like personas. In today's modern environment, everyone believes he or she is entitled and special and unique. It is harder to lead when the benchmark is so high. This is not an excuse for the lack of leadership, however, we may need to qualify that the bar is higher today given follower's expectations. Its hard to learn to lead in such an environment.
